All the cask ale served on the pub’s hand pumps is brewed on site in our microbrewery. Here is our core range:

Mediocria firma 3.6%: Complex ruby bitter, named after our pub’s latin motto
Slingshot 4%: A British tribute to American beer – this pale ale gets its piney, citrusy flavour from Douglas fir needles, not American hops. No air miles!
Saint Cloak 4.6%: A velvety, silky oatmeal stout brewed in tribute to the forgotten second saint of our fair city, Saint Amphibalus. Ask Richard to tell you the story some day…
Grindcobbe 4.8%: Cloudy wheatbeer a German would be proud of, named for one of the instigators of the peasant’s revolt, who lived in St Albans.

Our core line-up of four beers is available all year round, but each time we brew, we use a different wild ingredient for flavouring. So, you could order a stout in Spring flavoured with wild mint, then come back in Autumn and find the same beer now flavoured with toasted hazelnuts. There’s always a wild surprise!

We also offer a bespoke beer package – join us for a brewery tour & tasting where you pick exactly what kind of beer you’d like us to brew for you. Perfect for weddings. Beer tasting with the stags, cask tapping at the reception… Call the pub and ask for head brewer Richard if you’re interested!
